Bells Bourbon Barrel Aged Expedition stout, or BAE as it’s also known as, is the bourbon barrel aged version of their normal Expedition stout. The normal variety weighs in at just over 10%, and the bourbon barrel aged version bumps that heavyweight ABV to almost 13.5% – but, can a beer that’s already pretty good be enhanced by the BBA process? Barrel Aged IPAs don’t seem to always be a big hit, but I don’t know if until today, I’ve tried a Double IPA aged in Gin Barrels. Today, I’m taking a look at the appropriately named “Sippin’ on Gin Barrel Juice” double IPA from Grand Armory Brewing in Grand Haven, Michigan. So does gin barrel aging work with a double IPA? KBS is the first in Founder’s Barrel aged series of 2018. We know the next release will be Backwoods Bastard, which will become year-round after it’s release, but the rest of the Barrel Aged Series are unknowns. I picked this up, today – March 6th, so this review is from a bottle that’s as fresh as possible. KBS week started on March 5th, and will be rolling out after a limited taproom release so look for it soon!
