Founders 2018 Barrel Aged Series in Review

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, hopefully you can get a break from the family and watch something you’re interested in – like videos about beer!  Know anyone in your family who likes beer too?  Watch this with them.  This is my end of year retrospective on Founders 2018 Barrel Aged Series. I cover the six beers of Founders Barrel-Aged series and pick my favorites and least favorites. The six beers in this series are Founders KBS, Founders Backwoods Bastard, Founders Dank Wood, Founders Barrel Runner, Founders Curmudgeon’s Better Half and Founders CBS.

Saugatuck Brewing – 2018 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Pumpkin Chai

Pumpkin beers seem to be a binary choice in the craft beer world – love them or hate them, there are few people that fall in between. I personally don’t mind them, as long as they’re done well. I figured as it was getting closer to Halloween, I should probably try my first pumpkin beer of the season, and what better way to start than with Saugatuck Brewing’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Pumpkin Chai, which is brand new for 2018. This is officially listed as 2018 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Pumpkin Chai, which is another release in Saugatuck’s Bourbon Barrel Aged series, which joins prestigious company like Beam Me Up Stouty and BBA Neapolitan Milk Stout (which I NEED to get my hands on). So which side of the fence am I on with this Pumpkin Beer? Watch and find out!

New Holland – Banana Coconut Dragon’s Milk Reserve BBA Stout

The third in New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk Reserve line for 2018 is Banana and Coconut. I have to admit I was a little skeptical when I heard that banana was involved. Much like my opinion on coconut, bananas can be good when done right, but there’s a fine line between being good and too much, which will almost always put you squarely into “yuck” territory for me. Well today I’ll be taking a look at Banana Coconut Dragon’s Milk Reserve, which is New Holland’s premiere bourbon barrel aged stout. With a much classier new label design, does the beer inside match the facelift that was provided on the outside? Watch and find out more!

Founders Brewing Company – Dank Wood 2018 – 3rd of the Barrel Aged Series

Founder’s Dank Wood is the 3rd in their Barrel Aged series for 2018, and for that third release, they went with a Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Red IPA. It’s a bourbon barrel aged version of their 2017 release – reDANKulous, which as a red IPA, it should be right in my wheel house, as far as IPAs go.

Founder’s commercial description for Dank Wood is: “What do you get when a big, bold imperial red IPA meets an oak bourbon barrel? A palate stunner that’ll send your senses spinning or, as we like to call it, Dankwood. Rich caramel notes emerge from the depths of the IPA, highlighting strong malt character while the bourbon barrel-aging develops the complexity. A dank, sticky and slightly sweet sipper, Dankwood is the perfect alchemy of wood and hops.”

Where does it fall in the series so far? Watch and see.

Founders Brewing Company – Backwoods Bastard 2018 Review

It was only about a week and a half ago that Founders released KBS nationwide, and we’ve already got the second release of their Barrel Aged Series – Backwoods Bastard. While this time around, Backwoods Bastard is a year round release rather than a limited edition, how does it stack up against it’s 2017 counterpart that was released only about 6 months prior? Well if that’s actually a question that’s been keeping you up at night, you’re in luck! I’m not only reviewing 2018’s Backwoods Bastard, but I’m conducting a vertical tasting up against the 2017 variety!
